Preview | Our open canoe canoe taster days cater for absolute beginners wanting a leisurely half or full day introduction to the sport of open canoeing. They are designed to be fun as well as learning basic open canoe paddling skills & safety. You will be paddling in a 2 man open canoe with another person. This is an opportunity to see if this is the adventure sport for you – be inspired to take up canoeing in the future.
Previous Experience | No previous paddling experience is required but this can be an excellent refresher opportunity for those who just sat in and paddled a canoe before. A reasonable level of fitness will enable you to progress more rapidly and enjoyably. The ability to swim and some water confidence are advisable but not essential.
Location | Our Open Canoeing basic skills sessions, courses & holidays are initially based on the more sheltered open inland Loch Lochy or the tidal head waters of Loch Linnhe which is on our doorstep – with a number of small islands in the tidal loch to visit – ideal for families and half day sessions, often crossing the water to Ardgour.
Meeting Times & Dates| We meet at our base in Corpach, 4 miles from Fort William at 9.30am – 12.30pm or 1.30pm – 4.30pm for a half day session. Full day sessions run from 9.30am – 12 – 4.30pm. We always aim to be back at base by 5pm.
Open Canoe Taster & Beginner Sessions are available on weekly dedicated Mondays & Tuesdays. Or at all other times by Prior Arrangement for Groups of 3 or more.
Summary | These enjoyable skills training days days will develop your paddling and canoe handling skills which will include different paddle strokes and manoeuvres. The aim for the day will be for you the be able to control your canoe and set out on a led, simple, short journey. (See more in depth details or what you may get up to, need to bring, etc, below)

Our half or full introductory sessions and day tours are only led by local, friendly, professionally qualified and experienced instructors & guides.
Course Itinerary | During a half day or full day beginner session there will be an introduction to the basics of handling an open canoe in sheltered conditions including:
Personal Paddling Skills:
• Getting in and out of a 2 man open canoe from the shore or bank
• Learn basic balance in an open canoe
• Handling the paddle
• Basic forward paddling action with correct posture
Have a go at:
• Paddle strokes – forward; stopping while on the move; sweep strokes for turning; moving sideways; paddle in a straight line; turning the open canoe;
• A short paddling journey depending on the length of the course
• Boat trim & balance
• Gear selection and use
• Personal paddle sport clothing
• Basic water safety with confidence building activities built into the programme
• Individual fitness, food & hydration requirements.
We will supply all the specialist equipment needed to have fun whilst being safe and comfortable on the water. Open Canoes come complete with buoyancy aids, paddle, the necessary buoyancy; canoe cag, wet feet /socs, helmet, dry bags & bottles to keep your gear dry on a day paddle, any safety gear. Flasks if you do not have one.
You may like to hire:
probably nothing extra needed over an above this – plus the recommended personal clothing listed below. If you are going on an overnight journey or expedition you may need to hire some additional gear.
You should bring for Open Canoeing:
Towel, Long sleeved light / medium weight fleece or rugby top to wear when canoeing, Extra spare fleece or warm top, Water proof trousers & jacket, Change of under clothes or swimming costume, Light weight trousers or tracky bottoms (not jeans), A full change of warm clothes for when you have finished paddling, Warm hat, Old trainers if you have them, Plastic container for butties – but we have dry bags bottles. Flask – you can fill flasks here with us before leaving, Plastic or waterproof bag for your wet clothing, Sun block, Sun Hat, Sun Glasses! There will be extra requirements if you are going on an overnight tour or expedition with us.
